My son’s 4th birthday was a few weeks ago. I decided to do a superhero theme birthday because my little boy is really into beings with supernatural powers who like to kick the bad guys’ butts. I have to say this was the most fun children’s birthday I’ve ever been to. The kids just seemed to love it.
What I love is that with a few simple ideas I got from Pinterest and other blogs, I was able to make an awesome party and save some of money.
The first thing I wanted to do was get capes and masks for the kids. As I searched for capes and masks on websites like Oriental Trading and Etsy, I noticed that I was going to spend over $200 just to get capes for 15 children. The price did not include the masks. That was a little too much if you ask me. Since I wanted to stay on a budget, I decided that the best thing I could do was to make a few things myself. Yes people! I got crafty for this one.
When searching for ideas I came across a post from Living Locurto. Here, I found great ideas on how to throw a superhero birthday party. I used the template she has on the post to make the superhero masks. Using felt fabric, I cut out three masks per sheet. At .23 cents a sheet of felt fabric from Walmart, all 15 masks only cost me $1.15.
To make the superhero capes I bought seven yards of blue lining fabric at $1.99 a yard and a pack of Velcro for $1.49. The total amount I spent for the capes was $15.50. That beats $200 if you ask me. I found instructions on how to cut the fabric to make capes at MomsRising.org.
Here is what you’ll need:
- Measuring tape
- Piece of chalk
I found another great idea for the party on Pinterest. Making goodie bags can get a bit pricey if you are like me and want to stuff it with lots of candy and toys. Instead, I put three different kinds of colorful candy in clear glass jars. I bought small yellow goodie bags and had the kids pick the candy to their liking. The jars full of candy worked very nice with the decoration and the kids were happy because, let’s face it, they just love candy.
I got the jars and goodie bags at my local .99 cents store. The glass jars cost $1.49 each and I paid .99 cents for the small bags. The candy was no more than $15.
Finally, what is a good party without an awesome cake?
I found a cool picture of a superhero cake on Google images but it was a very big cake. So, I went to my local Dominican bakery and asked to have only the top layer of the cake (which was my favorite part) made. Then, I decided to make cupcakes and decorate them according to the theme. However, I could not for the life of me find any superhero theme cupcake toppers. Well, I got crafty again and decided to make them myself.
Using the printouts I found at Little Bit Funky, a two inch hole puncher, some glue and toothpicks, I made my very own Superhero Cupcake Toppers. Since I had all of these materials at home I didn’t spend any money to make them.
I have to say, the cake was my favorite of all. Because I got only the top layer of the cake, it only cost me $40. Yes, you might thing that is a lot to pay for a cake. But, I am sure that there is nowhere you could get the Hulk’s fist braking through Spiderman’s chest for less than that. LOL
In the end, I was very please with how everything turned out. I spent a lot less than I would if I had bought everything already made. The kids had great fun. There was lots of dancing, jumping, playing and even Spiderman gave JJ a little visit on his birthday. How better can it get?
