This Black Forest Protein Smoothie is filled with cherries and delicious chocolate, and topped with whipped cream for an indulgent smoothie that is good for you!
As I sit in my living room watching the Rio2016 Olympics, I can’t help but feel a tiny bit jealous of the extremely fit bodies I keep seeing on the screen. The reality is that I have not been very active lately as I have been doing a lot of sedentary work for the past year and exercise have been practically nonexistent. Since my move to South Florida, I have been wanting to start a new exercise routine again and I plan on doing so as soon as the kids begin school, which is only a few weeks away. In the meantime, I try to stay healthy in other ways.
It is no secret that I love protein smoothies. They make me feel that I’m making at least one good decision for my body even when I’m not keeping up with my daily exercise. Smoothies are a really great option to keep balance in your meals when you don’t have a lot of time to plan out and cook healthy meals on a daily bases. They are also a great way to indulge and enjoy the flavors of your favorite desserts without the gilt like it’s the case with this scrumptious Black Forest Protein Smoothie.
Like most people, I love chocolate. I get those chocolate late night cravings more often than I’ll like to admit. The really weird thing is that if I don’t have at least a little taste of chocolate when those cravings come, I cannot sleep until I have my chocolate.
To keep my chocolate cravings on check, I keep a bag of dark chocolate kisses in my pantry and eat one or two when those cravings attack. This week however, I took a different approach and made this awesome cherry chocolate protein smoothie using my favorite protein powder, Kura. It is a fun take on the Black Forest Cake, which is a famous German chocolate cake with a cherry filling and whipped cream frosting.
The ingredients for the smoothie are simple: cherries, almond milk, chia seeds, cocoa powder, rolled oats and Kura chocolate protein powder. Mix it all in a blender with some ice. Serve into a glass and top with whipped cream.
Simple right? It is really that easy to enjoy this delicious dessert like smoothie and get all the nutritious benefits of a great protein powder like Kura, which is made from natural ingredients, GMO free, and contains 14 grams of dairy protein, probiotics and 26 vitamins & minerals.
Now, go ahead and make a good decision today. Enjoy!
Black Forest Protein Smoothie
- 1 cup fresh cherries , pitted
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1/4 cup rolled oats
- 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup ice
- whipped cream for topping (optional)
- In a blender, mix cherries, almond milk, protein powder, chia seeds, oats, cocoa powder and ice until smooth.
- Serve and top with whipped cream as desired.
- Blend the smoothie for at least a minute if you have a high speed blender, and longer for a normal speed blender. This will ensure that your cherry smoothie doesn't have any lumps in it.
- I don't feel like this needs a sweetener, but you can add in a little honey or maple syrup if you prefer yours sweeter.
